Tectonic hazards are geological results of plate shifting exhibited by volcanic eruption, glacial erosion, tsunamis and earthquakes. Earthquakes are the most commonly reported hazards because of the greater likelihood of larger populations along major fault lines than in glacial or oceanic regions. Intro- when comparing different tectonic hazard events it can be seen that some can be seen have much larger costs than others, as well as they type of costs varying between different events for a variety of reasons. -One of the main reasons some tectonic hazards are more costly is the physical characteristics of the actual hazard event itself. • Tectonic hazard - a natural hazard caused by movement of tectonic plates (including volcanoes and earthquakes). • Tectonic plate - a rigid segment of the Earth’s crust which can ‘float’ across the heavier, semi-molten rock below. Continental plates are less dense, but thicker than oceanic plates. Immediate and long-term responses to a tectonic hazard. Human response to tectonic hazards can be immediate or long-term. Short-term or immediate responses occur in the days and weeks immediately after a disaster has happened. Natural Hazards: Tectonic Hazards The crust (oceanic and continental) and the upper mantle form a rigid shell at the Earth’s surface known as the lithosphere. It is broken into different fragments, which are called tectonic plates. The meeting of two plates is known as plate margin. The tectonic plates are part of the lithosphere, which includes the crust and the uppermost mantle. There are two types tectonic plates: Continental crust – found beneath the earth’s continental land masses and under shallow seas close to continents, it is thicker between 30 and 60km but is made of lighter rocks including granite. It is most commonly caused by a sudden movement of rocks within the Earth's crust.
